Scottish Highlands trekking information

Location

The Scottish Highlands

They say the Scottish Highlands are one of the most scenic regions of Europe. The region has  a.e. monumental mountain ranges, mysterious lochs, magical forests and much more. This area has the highest mountain in the British Isles and it is called Ben Nevis. Some trekking and hiking routes will take you close to this mountain.

Location
The Scottish Highlands are found in the further most north of Scotland. A region sliced in half by the Great Glen, the Grampian Mountains are seemingly forced apart from the ranges in the north West of Scotland. Due to the location two weather systems, high pressure and low pressure, continental and maritime that makes the weather so changeable.  So it is difficult to say, when you should go and what is the best time. There is no specific best time. Unless you have a season-dependent interest like gardens and skiing.

Population
The Highlands are home to a quarter of a million people living in communities spread throughout the area. From the vibrant city of Inverness to remote crofting communities and sparsely populated islands.

Geology
The Scottish Highlands lie to the north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault, that runs from Arran to Stonehaven. This part of Scotland is largely composed of ancient rocks from the Cambrian and Precambrian periods which were uplifted during the later Caledonian Orogeny.

Wildlife
In the wild land of the Highlands, interesting and spectacular plants and animals are not confined to nature reserves. Wildlife appears in the most casual of encounters. You will probably spot a golden eagle, especially if you are going to walk in the mountainous country. There are more than 400 pairs of golden eagle in Scotland, many in the Highland area. Also birds of prey and seabirds can be seen. Among animals red squirrel is common in places. Several parts of the Moray Firth shoreline could give you a view of bottle-nose dolphins (or take a boat trip).

Hiking/trekking
Most of the famous long distance footh paths and short trekkings and walks are crossing the Highland or you can find the trail there. For example: the West Highland Way, the Great Glen Way and the Speyside Way. It is a popular and great place for hiking. Many travel agencies are organising walking tours, short and long distance, luxury and basic.
