Las Alpujarras trekking information

La Alpujarra

La Alpujarra (sometimes Las Alpujarras) is a mountainous region in the Southern part of Spain, which stretches south from the mountains of the National Park the Sierra Nevada near Granada in the autonomous region of Andalusia. The eastern part of the district lies in the province of Almería and the western part in the province of Granada. The region consists mainly of valleys which descend at right angles from the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains on the north, to the Sierras Almijara, Contraviesa and Gádor, which separate it from the Mediterranean Sea, to the south. The La Alpujarra region has great natural beauty. Because of a warm southern climate combined with a reliable supply of water for irrigation from the rivers running off the Sierra Nevada, the valleys of the western Alpujarras are among the most fertile in Spain. You can see many fruit trees, like oranges, lemons, almonds and grape vins. The eastern Alpujarra, in the province of Almería, is more arid, but is still very attractive.

The biggest villages in the region are Lanjarón, Órgiva, Laujar, Ugíjar and Berja. All are situated at a considerable elevation, and Trevélez, whose main church is at 1476 metres above sea level, is the highest recognized town in Spain. The three white villages in the gorge of the Rio Poqueira (Poqueira valley), Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, have become recognised tourist destinations. From here you can make some beautiful daywalks or more day walks.

Las Alpujarras is a perfect area to explore on foot and there are many well-signposted walking routes, ranging from a short stroll, to day long hikes into the Sierra Nevada. For the really serious walker there are two famous long-distance foot paths that cross Las Alpujarras. One is the GR-7, which starts in Tarifa in the Cadiz province and crosses Europe all the way to Greece. The other is the GR-142 which runs from Lanjaron to Fiñana on the northern side of the Sierra Nevada in Almeria.

The best months for walking in the region Las Alpujarras are April to mid-June, and mid-September to mid-November.
