The region, Ü is the historic heartland of Tibetan Culture. It can be called as jewel of ancient kingdoms, stage for would-be conquerors and home of the Dalai Lamas.
This region has many interesting places like Ganden Monastery, Tsurphu and Samye Monastery, the oldest and most important in the country. You can also find here Yumbulagang, Tibet's oldest building in the Yarlung valley. Nam-tso, an immense saltwater lake with its gorgeous turquoise hue, is the natural attraction of the Ü region. While Lhamo La-tso, the only real challenge for the independent travellers is also one of the lakes that attracts many visitors.
Travelling in the region does not require a permit, but if you go to Samye and beyond it you need a travel permit.
