Austria is a mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. The Central Eastern Alps, Northern Limestone Alps and Southern Limestone Alps are all partly in Austria. Of the total area of Austria (84 000 km² or 32,000 sq. mi), only 32% of the country is below 500 metres (1,640 ft).
The Alps in the west of Austria flatten somewhat into low lands and plains in the east of the country. The biggest area is the Austrian Alps, which constitute 62% of Austria's total area.
The second greater mountain area is situated in the north. Known as the Austrian granite plateau, it is located in the central area of the Bohemian Mass.
Austria’s cities fascinate with their monumental architectural buildings spanning all major epochs from gothic to renaissance, from baroque to jugendstil, and post modernism Austria’s capital Vienna offers a unique blend of imperial traditions and stunning modern architecture. It is famous for its cultural events, imperial sights, coffee houses, cozy wine taverns, and the very special Viennese charm. Linz will serve as Europe’s host city in 2009, when the Province of Upper Austria’s capital assumes the title of European Capital of Culture.
Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is dominated by churches, castles and palaces. Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, is particularly charming with its medieval flair. Architectural highlights from past and present can be found at every corner.
Innsbruck and its surrounding holiday villages are a walker’s paradise. Like the Zirbenweg, a 4 mile long panorama promenade in the midst of a nature preserve.

Walking in Austria will get you close to nature and allow you to get to know the people and the wonderful traditions of Austria. The snow-covered mountains, the Apres-Ski after a day on the slopes and the Austrian "Gemuetlichkeit" will give your stay in Austria the magic touch no other destination can duplicate. The greater part of Austria lies in the cool/temperate climate zone in which humid westerly winds predominate.
