Lukla (2860 m) is a town in the Khumbu region of Eastern Nepal. Most people who are doing the Gokyo Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek, will start in Lukla. From here the first stop most likely will be Phakding (2600m).
Lukla has a small airport/airstrip. You will get there by airplane in a flight of about half an hour (from Kathmandu) or you can walk from Jiri, which will take about 7 to 8 days walk. It is quite an experience to fly to Lukla, as in the end of the flight it seems like you are going to end against a mountain. Exciting. Lukla has many lodges and guest houses and many kind of shops. You can eat basic western style food here. There are also some bakeries. If you are stuck here because of the weather and your flight is postponed, you can visit the market and shops. From Lukla it will take 2 days walk to Namche Bazaar (3442 meter). You can do it in a long day walk, but this is not advisable due to increased risk of altitude sickness.
